Rectangles of Phelps Street

On the way to work, I noticed that one of 8 rectangles cut into the sidewalk held water, while the other 7 did not. This led to a long-term investigation of the 8 rectangles.

8 trees planted in the middle of winter in Buffalo

Replanted a new tree in rectangle #1 because the first one leaned over at a steep angle and blocked the sidewalk. A number of plants are lifting and pushing through the asphalt near the rectangles.

The drainage seems to be much more swift now. The Queen Anne's Lace is blooming in rect. #8

I wonder whether the leaf growth rate is fairly steady, or if not, what it is dependent on.

Phelps Street - South sidewalk

It seems likely, since the freezes and snowfalls of last year did not cause widespread plant death, that someone has applied an herbicide to the sidewalk.
